Cape Town Stadium
The City is building a world-class, FIFA-compliant 68 000-seat stadium in Green Point. It will serve as a semi-final venue in 2010 and a sustainable multi-purpose venue thereafter for ball sports, major event and concerts.
Apart from building the stadium, the other major impact is the public transport plan. This is expected to be the biggest benefit for Cape Town after 2010. The plan aims to ensure that rail, rapid bus transport and the recapitalised taxi service move people about efficiently, and reduces private car use.
A new electrical substation is being built in in Green Point to ensure enough power for the stadium and surrounding area.
Factors considered during the planning of the stadium included:
-
The solid bedrock just below the surface means the stadium could not be sunk into the ground, and will therefore be higher
-
The exterior will be covered with noise-reducing cladding in order to reduce noise levels
-
The roof is designed in such a way that noise will be reflected back into the stadium.
