Structural Engineering

Having been involved in numerous feasibility and location studies, planning, detailed design and management of a wide range of projects, GIBB has the experience and expertise to develop optimum engineering solutions.
These include:

  • Foundations including, spread footings, piles and other foundation types
  • In-situ reinforced concrete
  • Precast reinforced concrete, both structural and non-structural
  • Pre-stressed concrete both pre- and post-tensioned
  • Mass concrete
  • Structural steelwork, including tubular and hollow sections
  • Timber
  • Masonry (brickwork and blockwork)
  • Composite construction
  • Space frames
  • Retaining structures

GIBB's activities have led to the development of in-house teams of qualified structural and civil engineers capable of carrying out designs (working to both national and international standards), coordination and supervision of construction to ensure the most economic and sustainable incorporation of conventional and "space-age" building materials in many areas of today's market.

  • Commercial buildings:
    • Banks
    • Offices
    • Parking garages
    • Shopping centres and malls
  • Industrial buildings:

GIBB also has an impressive record of involvement in projects that address the vital needs of previously disadvantaged communities - all of which endeavour to promote maximum participation of emerging community contractors and labour-based practices in project execution.

In addition to structural designs for new projects, GIBB has undertaken alterations, extensions, and renovations to existing structures which, in many cases, involve detailed and complex techniques to allow clients to maintain operations throughout the period of construction. This type of project requires particular engineering knowledge and a close working understanding with contractors in the development of designs and details incorporating shoring, underpinning, temporary works, falsework, demolition techniques, needling, propping and jacking.

GIBB's Structural discipline includes the following credentials:

  • Extensive experience in a variety of industries and a broad knowledge of the requirements of the African construction industry.
  • Full ISO-9001 compliancy and certification.
  • In-house multi-disciplinary support of civil, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, environmental and transportation engineering services.
  • Personal leadership and management by a director.
  • Resources to provide a quality service on large, fast-track projects.
