COMING FULL CIRCLE WITH GAUTRAIN

Gautrain’s next chapter brings together capabilities from across GIBB Group: rail engineering, power, transportation planning, architecture and infrastructure investment. It demonstrates how our teams combine their expertise to support a shared outcome: transport infrastructure that connects people and sustains economic opportunity.
Through GIBB Crede, our infrastructure investment arm, GIBB Group has acquired an equity interest in Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM), the consortium appointed to operate and upgrade Gautrain under a 15-year concession. The concession commenced on 28 September 2026.
This participation builds on a relationship with Gautrain that stretches from its early development to its operation today. It also reflects the Group’s broader approach to infrastructure, connecting technical knowledge, commercial understanding and investment capability through partnership.
Different capabilities, a shared contribution
GIBB’s involvement began with the scheme’s conceptualisation, design and implementation oversight, as part of Gauteng Province’s engineering and project management advisory team. After passenger services commenced in 2010, we continued supporting the Gautrain Management Agency and the outgoing concessionaire in various capacities.
That experience informed our contribution to SSM’s successful bid. Colleagues across Rail, Power, Transportation Planning and Architecture worked together to develop cost-effective technical solutions suited to the concession’s requirements. GIBB Crede’s investment team helped structure the commercial and legal arrangements among its stakeholders.
The strength of this contribution lay in how those capabilities came together. Technical requirements, transport needs and investment considerations were addressed as connected parts of the same programme.
For clients and partners, this demonstrates the value of working with a group whose teams can bring different perspectives to a complex infrastructure challenge and coordinate their contribution around its delivery.
Supporting the journeys that matter
Gautrain connects Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport, supporting journeys to work, businesses and services. Sustaining those connections requires continued investment in the system and attention to the needs of its passengers.
The new concession covers operations, maintenance, refurbishment, upgrading and modernisation. Planned enhancements include more weekday services, longer operating hours, additional trains and midi-buses, and improvements to stations and depots. Renewable energy and expanded Wi-Fi and digital services also form part of the programme.
These improvements will be introduced progressively to support Gautrain’s long-term performance and everyday mobility across Gauteng.
Building lasting value through partnership
GIBB Crede’s equity participation extends the Group’s longstanding technical involvement in Gautrain into infrastructure investment. It provides a practical example of how GIBB Group’s diversified capabilities can support infrastructure across different stages of its life.
This milestone reflects collaboration within GIBB Group and across the wider consortium. We recognise the colleagues who contributed their expertise and commitment throughout the demanding two-year bidding process, and the partners whose complementary capabilities helped secure the concession.
Together with our consortium partners, we look forward to supporting Gautrain’s continued role in connecting people, enabling business and creating lasting value for Gauteng.
