Selected Project Experience

Roads Authority of Namibia

Location:
Namibia

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
GIBB was appointed to provide the consulting services for the duel carriageway between Windhoek and Rehoboth in Namibia (approximately 90 km).

This project entailed the upgrade of the existing two-lane, single carriageway to a new four-lane divided dual carriageway road including interchanges, river bridges and a road-over-rail bridges. The road section serves as part of the transit corridor from South Africa to Namibia’s northern neighbours including Angola, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

GIBB’s tasks included: feasibility studies; preliminary designs; detailed designs for interchanges, bridge, culvert and drainage systems; preparation of bid documentation; economic analysis; traffic engineering; technical specifications; construction administration, and site supervision.

Upgrade to Bituminous Standard of Access Road and Khan River Bridge to Husab Mine and Access Road (Design & Bidding Phase)

Location:
Swakopmand, Windhoek, Namibia

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
GIBB provided feasibility studies, detailed designs and bid documentation preparation and site for a heavy duty, 30km access road and (with various structures and bridges) to Husab Mine, Namibia. The Khan Bridge over the river (120 m long and 4 m high) withstands peak flood of 800 m3/minute.

GIBB’s specific tasks included the following: feasibility studies; preliminary design; economic analyses and cost estimation of structures; bid and contract documentation. Additionally, engineering and construction was provided for the following: hydrological and stormwater structures; embankments; bridge, and culverts and road pavement alternatives.

Included in these tasks were data collection and control surveys, traffic and transportation analysis and design, cost benefit studies, detail engineering design, environmental impact assessments, environmental management plans (including mitigation plan) and project management.
