Selected Project Experience

Location:
Gaza Province, Mozambique

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
As development partner, GIBB provided technical and financial evaluation of Massingir Dam in the Gaza Province of Mozambique. This included initial technical studies such as water availability to feed into the development of project implementation agreements and purchasing and off-taker agreements.

Location:
Zambezia Province, Mozambique

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
The Highland African Mining Company (HAMC) designated GIBB (with KLM Consulting Services) to provide a study into assuring the water supply to the Marropino Mine Process Plant. The water supports mining operations delivering 500 000 tons of ore containing tantalite per annum.

The aim was to determine the most economical and practical water supply system. GIBB investigated the option of upgrading all existing vandalised and dilapidated pipes, canals and dams versus the feasibility of construction of a new 3 km long pipeline.

Location:
Tete Province, Mozambique

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
The Minas De Revuboe mine is located in the Moatize Basin and provides a world class coal mine producing coking coal and thermal coal for the global market, with the potential to process up to 17 Mpta.

GIBB’s scope included the survey, demining, railway line and water management elements of the project. Key features included topographical surveys, general mine action assessment and demining. Water studies included hydrology, flood hydrology, sedimentation, geohydrology, and groundwater and surface water quality studies.

The engineering components included design of water storage dams, bulk water conveyance system, flood water diversion canal design, railway bridges and culverts, relocation design, signalling and telecommunications design, railway balloon and yard lighting design. Train operations and a rolling stock study were also completed.

Location:
Tete Province, Mozambique

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
The Mozambique government appointed GIBB to conduct a feasibility study for the geotechnical aspects of the Estima Coal Mine Project, 90 km North West of Tete in Mozambique.

As a green field site, GIBB explored the infrastructure development to support the open-pit mining operation.  The areas identified for geotechnical investigation scope of work included:

Mining Infrastructure Area.
Coal Preparation Plant site.
ROM pad.
Conveyors from ROM pad to CPP.
Materials investigation.

The investigation involved carrying out a desk study, overview mapping, site reconnaissance and field investigations to determine the geotechnical parameters and recommendations for earthworks, building materials and the design of practical foundation solutions.

Air quality monitoring and equipment maintenance services for the mine’s four air quality monitoring stations and two meteorological stations.

GIBB’s mining team was responsible for the railway infrastructure, roads, and stockyard terrace FEL3 for the Nacala New Coal Export Terminal.

Location:
Nacala, Mozambique

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
GIBB was involved in the development programme rolling out implementation of infrastructure in Mozambique. The process included environmental monitoring, auditing and acting as the funder’s technical advisor for the rehabilitation of the Nacala Water Supply Scheme.

GIBB’s tasks on the project included the following elements: assessment of existing water supply infrastructure; design documentation review; construction monitoring; environmental assessment of proposed works, and environmental construction monitoring and auditing.

Location:
Nacala, Mozambique

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
Nacala Coal Terminal is a greenfield coal terminal which has been developed in Mozambique, designed for 24 MTPA of both coking and thermal coal from mine operations in the Tete Province.

The terminal is a long term solution with large potential for expansion as Nacala is a natural deep water port capable of handling large bulk carriers. It is a world class coal facility operating at very high levels of efficiency.  GIBB’s specific scope included the stock yard terrace, railway alignment, and drainage design elements of the project.
