Green Point Athletics Stadium – 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Orange Grove, Empire-Perth and Brixton are in close proximity to the Johannesburg CBD and lie along BRT routes. They were demarcated as Special Development Zones. GIBB provided all the infrastructure for the creation of these areas.

The aim of the Special Development Zones was to provide a mechanism which would speed up the development process by eliminating time – consuming legislative procedures and developing feasible market related development models.

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
The De Hoop Dam is a gravity dam on the Steelpoort River near Bugersfort, Limpopo as part of the Olifants Water Management Area and catchment.

The resultant dam design was a 81 m high roller compacted concrete dam, 1 015 m in length, with a storage capacity of 347.6 million m3 and a surface area of 16.9 km2. The project also included project management, construction supervision, contract administration and cost control of all the works.

GIBB was appointed for the Bus Rapid Transit Link project, which extends from Soweto to Nasrec and the central business district of Johannesburg.

GIBB was appointed for the operational support for Phase 0, Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Integrated Rapid Transport (IRT) MyCiTy bus service. GIBB, as part of a joint venture, was appointed to assist in the roll-out of operations of the service.

Part of GIBB’s role was to provide overall operational support for the city’s initial and subsequent phases of the IRT system, which was launched during May 2011.

The Airports Company South Africa appointed GIBB for the fuel tank project at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg.  Tasks included process and installation design of fuel tanks, fuel piping and appurtenances.

Other major components included the design of civil infrastructure and road geometrics (for fuel farm facilities) and electrical and instrumentation design for the petro-chemical plant. Traffic studies were also required incorporating traffic flow forecasts for fuel farm facilities.

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
GIBB was appointed to design and monitor the construction of a 1 344 MW pumped storage scheme in the Drakensburg of South Africa. The design and construction included an upper reservoir (50 m high CFRD dam) and lower reservoir (40 m high RCC dam), an underground power house complex, with access tunnels and associated waterways which link the two reservoirs.

The project also involved the ancillary works that included buildings, roads, transmission lines and temporary and permanent infrastructure. The project upper dam is able to store 21 000 MWh of energy.

GIBB’s tasks included engineering design for: civil; hydropower; underground; dams; mechanical; foundation; structural, and electrical enginnering. Additionally, the scope included documentation, cost estimations environmental services, contract administration, design monitoring, project management and construction supervision.

SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was tasked for the design of the first commercial building to be constructed within the business area of the Coega Industrial Development Zone in Port Elizabeth.  This is the building of the Coega Development Corporation.

SVAI designed the building with the required aesthetic guidelines of predominantly white horizontally delineated buildings, situated along street edges. The building includes external shading service walkway structures which are integrated into the façade, in order to complement the movement-sensing and auto-dimming interior lighting system.

Additionally, the curved and tiled atrium facade and external podium steps contribute to the building’s civic presence on the street intersection.

GIBB was appointed to provide the design for structural, electrical and mechanical services for the drilling modules involving structural steel, HVAC, drilling equipment specification and fire protection.

By the year 2025, Sasol Mining anticipates the deployment of production sections within the Alexander coal blocks. This forms part of Sasol Mining’s plan to fulfil their 2050 mandate to supply coal to the Secunda Synfuels Operations (SSO).

GIBB Mining’s task was to conduct the feasibility study on the project, which is expected to yield between 6-8 million t/a of coal. GIBB Mining was also responsible for the mine design within the first 1 km radius of the box cut to tie into the overall mine plan.

This encompassed all geotechnical and geohydrological studies, bulk power, water supply, materials handling system design and all supporting infrastructure including offices, buildings, workshops, sewage treatment and a 20 km mine access road.

South32 – Khutala Life Extension Project – Block A West FS

The Khutala Colliery is contracted to supply the ESKOM Kendal Power Station with coal from the No.4 Upper (U) Seam and the No. 2 Seam reserves until 2033.

The purpose of the Khutala Block A West project is to extend the life of the underground operation by accessing an approximate 38Mt of ROM coal via a decline shaft equipped with a bulk material handling system and one-way traffic flow.

GIBB tracked the progress of the concept level design completed by South32 to a feasibility study level of design that provided the knowledge for accessing the Block A West reserves safely while seamlessly enmeshing with the existing Khutala operations.

The project included the bulk and internal servicing of 1 452 erven.  GIBB also assisted the client to review designs, undertake contract administration and site monitoring.

The Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate is a 780 ha upmarket golf, wildlife and residential estate set in the beauty and serenity of Africa’s open grasslands, close to Johannesburg.

The estate is designed to eventually house 1 700 residences, an equestrian centre, a luxury health and wellness centre, a 340 ha conservation area with wildlife, a village square with restaurants, entertainment and retail stores as well as a luxury resort hotel.

GIBB’s task was to design the estate houses with standards and detail which reflect a reference to the natural surrounding landscape and heritage context while providing luxury, comfort and relaxed liveability.

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
GIBB, together with ACG Architects, were involved in the design and development of this property in Cape Town. This property development consists of 75 units which include 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units, as well as penthouses and maisonettes, both with designated swimming pools and some with private gardens.

There is basement parking for the entire development. Designed on contemporary lines with bespoke finishes, the units have orchard, mountain and sea views. Additionally, there is state of the art security, Wi-Fi, a fitness room, braai area and a heated swimming pool for the complex.

GIBB, together with ACG Architects, was tasked to lead a multi-discipline team whose primary role was to assist the Department on its housing delivery objective.

Services included: township establishment; aerial photography, topographical surveys; feasibility studies; land purchase; EIA Scoping; NHBRC Phase 1 and 2 geotechnical investigations; preparation of house plans and procurement documentation; preliminary and detailed engineering designs (including water, sanitation, roads and stormwater); foundation design and specifications; environmental and safety control during construction; construction supervision and monitoring; liaison with the Department, consultants and communities, and partaking in PRT evaluation workshops.

SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the creation and design of the building at 8 Melville Road in Illovo, Johannesburg, which is the office building of SVAI itself.

It now stands as a sustainable, efficient corporate office building using green technology with efficient floor plates. It offers ventilated facades, green walls and well-lit atriums providing natural light – aspects which earned it a four star rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa.

SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design and execution of this project. The project includes upmarket offices of 3 000 m2 and a gym of 4 200 m2 within the Waterstone Shopping centre precinct. The final design illustrates mixed use design through a successful combination of offices, gym and convenience retail.

SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed to design and build the expansion of the project at the Koeberg Nuclear Plant in Melkbosstrand, just north of Cape Town. The design was focussed around the components and purposes of the plant.

The primary purpose of the facility is that it accommodates two training control room simulators that replicate the actual Koeberg Nuclear Plant control rooms. The exceptional technical nature of the facility required a technical enclosure of a very high specification.

Complementary to this primary function, the facility accommodates a range of classrooms used for a variety of workshops and teaching functions. Additionally, there are open plan offices with a staff kitchen, a mezzanine level with executive offices, a canteen and a staff pause area with ablution facilities.

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed to do the design for the Mangosuthu University of Technology entrance, situated in close proximity to the Durban Industrial Basin in Umlazi.

The project included a billboard which features a scrolling time function and a notice board, which also serves the surrounding community. Due to the building being on a major arterial route, the Technikon’s entrance required vehicular and pedestrian access to the campus and to have a strong visual and institutional identity.

The design ensured that the entrance is characterised by an industrial steel screen which is faceted from left to right, culminating in a semi-curve. This leads out towards the road creating a dynamic entrance and electronic billboard.

Mangosuthu University of Technology Natural Science Laboratory

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed to design the new Natural Science Laboratory building at Mangosuthu University of Technology. The design included a ramp system to link up to an existing building.

The building was designed for five full laboratories and two half laboratories accommodating 50 and 25 students respectively, covering an area of 1 700 m2. The use of intelligent building systems allowed for the design of effective passive cross-ventilation, while responsive facades allow for controlled solar gain and loss, ensuring low maintenance.

The planted green roof acts as a heat sink that naturally cools the building while creating an active growing garden. The new Natural Sciences Laboratory building enhances the active, changing research environment.

SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the Fun Factory facility at the Discovery Health offices in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The Fun Factory is a corporate child care facility which offers supervision and schooling from 6 months to Grade 0 for the staff from Discovery Health and the surrounding area.

The design concept extended beyond simple decoration to a complete healthy learning environment. Natural light, fresh air, orientation and spatial management were consciously created to enhance the well-being of the school and its learners.

The building is designed as a ‘habitable toy’ and engages the young learner’s experience through mental, physical and social stimulation.

SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the Samtra Maritime Training Academy in Simon’s Town, approximately 50 km from Cape Town. The design included a fully catered dining room, conference rooms, classrooms (each seating 20 people), computer training rooms and a fully catered dining room. Additionally, various simulator rooms were designed which enables near-reality experiences to enrich the courses being offered.

SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the Gateway Hotel located in Umhlanga, just north of Durban. Tasks included the design of eco-friendly accommodation, conference centre and restaurant facilities, to ensure the hotel appeals to both leisure and business guests.

Additionally, the design included direct access to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping and a seasonal pool bar and pizzeria restaurant were included. The screen surrounding the Gateway Hotel is not only an eye-catching design of leaves, but also an efficient shading technique. It acts as a solar shield for the dominant northern facades of the building.

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was appointed for the design of the 23 000 m2 Shoprite Checkers in the Kenako Centre in Port Elizabeth.

The emphasis was for the design to enhance the experience of the pedestrian and patrons using the walkways and entrances between the existing buildings and retail malls. The building opens to a very active Uitenhage Road, resulting in visible entrances and parking.

The site is close to major facilities, including the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Missionvale Campus, the Eastern Cape Training Centre and the Dora Nginza Hospital.

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
The JSE-listed REIT Redefine invested approximately R1 billion to develop Matlosana Mall with Abacus Asset Managers as developer and leasing manager.  SVAI, a subsidiary of GIBB, was tasked with the design of a 65 000 m2 GLA regional mall in the town of Klerksdorp.

The site is roughly 20 ha in area, flanked on the north side by the N12 highway and, on the south, by a seasonal wetland. The mall was designed to accommodate 265 shops, 6 movie theatres, a gym, an office component on the first floor.

Additionally, there is a food court surrounded by fast food outlets and restaurants, which include inside and covered outside sitting areas. The mall design won the SAPOA Shopping Centres Category A Award in 2015.

Pavement Rehabilitation of Runways and Taxiways

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
ACSA appointed GIBB to undertake studies of air traffic, geometric design, pavement engineering, drainage and stormwater engineering, runway asphalt friction solutions and lighting design.

This was for the rehabilitation of the pavement of the existing runways and associated taxiways at the East London Airport, following International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) compliance.

The works primarily entailed the milling of existing asphalt layers, asphalt inlay and geometric and/or structural overlays, improvement of runway end safety areas (RESA), as well as side strips where required.

All pavement work was carried out at night between 21h30 and 05h00 which met the requirement that the airside infrastructure be fully operational at the end of each night shift.

Construction of Car Park and Access Road at East London Airport

GIBB’s Responsibilities:
GIBB was appointed by ACSA to design and supervise construction of a car park at the East London Airport.  The works primarily entailed the construction of earth and/or layer-works and asphalt surfacing for a new parking area.

Additionally, tasks included the installation of new fencing and low level lighting as well as new exit and entry points with automatic booms. This facility has created an additional 230 parking bays at the airport.

Through the appointment by ACSA for the arterial road for East London Airport, GIBB provided all civil services for a two lane, two way urban road, 3 km in length. Services included road design, construction monitoring and contract administration.

Gauteng Rapid Rail Link System Infrastructure and Operational Design

GIBB was appointed to be a member of the transaction advisory team for public-private partnerships on the Gauteng Rapid Rail Link Project in Johannesburg,

Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. Tasks included: technology and socio-economic studies; rail alignment and station site assessment; route planning and station location; passenger and revenue demand forecasting; civil and perway works design; review of the relocation and protection of utilities; construction assurance and utility relocation; commercial support for variations; operations output specification; and preparation and adjudication of concession contract.

GIBB was appointed for the Gauteng Rapid Rail Link Tunnel which serves part of Gauteng with a rapid transport service, providing a safe, efficient and reliable service to commuters.  It is also linked to the OR Tambo International Airport.

GIBB’s tasks included: design review and specifications; provision of a construction supervision team for 15 km of soft and hard rock tunnelling, including three underground stations; earthworks; bridges; viaducts; stations; the EM and M depot; signals; telecoms; safety; security, and noise and vibration.

This project was for the Moses Madhiba Commuter Station at the Moses Madhiba soccer stadium in Durban. Specific tasks included a feasibility study, railway infrastructure planning and design, train operations analysis, project management and construction monitoring and system interface design and testing and commissioning.

Klipriver Business Park is a 270 ha Business Park located at the intersection of the R59 and R550.  The development consisted of industrial, commercial and retail sites. GIBB provided civil services planning for the total development and the detailed design and supervision for Phase 1.
